Only a few years ago the highest level of qualification available in Business Administration was the MBA (Master of Business Administration), a well-regarded qualification offered by most major universities. After completing an MBA a small proportion of students would continue to a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), but this was generally seen as a research qualification, of little relevance to practicing managers.

Only a few years ago the highest level of qualification available in Business Administration was the MBA (Master of Business Administration), a well-regarded qualification offered by most major universities. After completing an MBA a small proportion of students would continue to a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), but this was generally seen as a research qualification, of little relevance to practicing managers.

This situation has changed in recent years because of the introduction of a new type of qualification, the Professional or Vocational Doctorate. Professional doctorates are generally awarded in areas where most candidates for the degree are involved in the practice of a profession, rather than carrying out academic research. Professional Doctorates are available in a number of areas, including Engineering (EngD), Education (EdD), Social Sciences (DSocSci) and Clinical Psychology (DClinPsych), as well as the one we’re concerned with here, the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA).

The name of a Professional Doctorate generally specifies the subject area in which it is awarded, rather than the more generic Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which can be awarded in any subject area. PhD programmes are usually research-based, with no taught content, other than perhaps a few short courses in research methodology. By contrast, Professional Doctorates usually include a year of advanced-level study prior to the research phase. In the case of the DBA, this taught component often focuses on current hot topics, such as entrepreneurship and branding.

The DBA also incorporates a research element, but this is usually applied research, rather than the scholarly research found in PhD programmes. Professional doctorates generally require the candidate to produce piece of original research of a similar length to a PhD thesis, usually around 70,000 words. However, this may take the form of a portfolio of technical reports on different research projects, rather than a single, long thesis.

Many candidates undertake a DBA on a part-time basis, fitting it around their work commitments. In this case, the research element may be something of direct relevance to their employer and the course may even be sponsored by an employer. A thesis may be jointly supervised by faculty members and company employees.

To date relatively few institutions offer DBA programmes, but their numbers are increasing rapidly. They include such well known names as Harvard University and Heriot-Watt University. It still remains to be seen whether DBA programmes will come to rival the MBA in popularity, but don’t be surprised when you notice that your manager’s nameplate reads “Doctor”.

Obviously it is spoken in Germany that has one of the largest populations in Europe. It is also used in countries like Austria and Switzerland. You will find that many of Germany’s neighboring countries speak German too even though it is not the official language. This trend spreads to many countries even as far as the Baltic and Balkan nations. This is the result of economic and historical reasons.

German will come in handy if you plan to visit any of these countries without speaking English.

German is also a fine language to have in terms of business. It has many world leading companies in the automotive, IT and financial services industries. Speaking German could open up opportunities for a career move or to develop alliances with business partners.

So, if you want to learn German with a learn German software course then it may not be such a simple process of elimination. There are many course out there that you may find it difficult to choose one.

It is often hard to advise someone on which is the best software course for them. Ultimately it comes down to an individuals objectives and the way they are most comfortable learning.

When you understand your objective, you can then concentrate on what the software offers. This means how it teaches you the language. Some tell you what to say without bothering to explain why you do this. The philosophy behing this is that we are wired to pick up languages intuitively with enough exposure to any language.

This method is the approach behind immersion learning. Immersion learning is where you may spend time in a German speaking country. There you have to speak and understand German to communicate and you are constantly exposed to people speaking German. In this way you stay motivated and get constant chances to hear and use German.

This is good in theory and most people agree that immersion is the best way to learn. So the software that tries to replicate this process is a good idea but it falls down because the person learning has to be self motivated.

Thus the method is only truly effective, if the software is used often or constantly to replicate this immersion process. This often fails because people can’t spend enough time using the software around their regular life that involves speaking English.

Other courses are more traditional in the sense that they tell you what to say and then explain why or how this works. So they will tell you what to say in a situation and then explain the rules or grammar of what was said or the meaning of the vocabulary.

This may seem difficult to learn too but some people will get more confidence learning this way. They will understand why they are saying something and this could lead to them speaking to German people. Once you are confident about speaking to German speaking people, your learning will really increase.

How’s your spelling? Pretty good? Then I reckon that you’d say that there was only one P in speechmaking. However, if you intend to make a speech, you had better remember that there are, in fact, three Ps in speechmaking - Pace, Poise and Polish.

And if you can incorporate these three Ps into your speechmaking, you will be certain of making a good impression on just about any audience you may come across.

Pace. This is a ‘make or break’ P, so don’t underestimate it’s importance. If you get this wrong, your audience will either be bored to tears and will be struggling to hide their yawns from you OR they will miss every third word you say as you race to finish your delivery.

Have you ever listened to a speaker who had been taught that speaking slowly allowed the audience to understand what you were saying better? If you have, you’ll know that there is a world of difference between easily understandable and excruciatingly slow! Even the most interesting topic will be made boring by a slow drawl and your audience will be itching to scream “speed it up, won’t you? I have to be in work tomorrow morning!”

Delivering your speech too slowly is guaranteed to make even the most generous audience lose their concentration and their patience.

On the other hand, if your pace is too fast, many people in your audience will simply lose the thread of what you are saying and listening to you will become too much like hard work. Your responsibility is to make the audiences’ task of listening to your speech easy, not difficult and you should be striving to give your audience the luxury of simply relaxing and letting your words seep effortlessly into their minds.

Deliver your words slowly enough for your audience to be able to easily absorb what you are saying yet fast enough to avoid your delivery becoming tedious. Remember that by varying the pace of your presentation, you will be able to retain the interest and attention of those listening to you.

Poise. Most speakers believe that the subject matter of their presentation is all that is important and spend most of their time worrying about the actual construction of their speech. They are happy to spend hours collecting snippets of information, organising it into an acceptible order, selecting an appropriate opening and closing style and making sure that the rhythm and flow of their words is just right.

And of course, all that effort is essential to producing an excellent speech. But it doesn’t stop there. How you present yourself is just as important as how you present your words.

Run through this checklist immediately before you step out in front of your audience:

1. Is your clothing clean, smart, appropriate and arranged correctly? 2. Is your hair neatly combed? 3. Does your body language convey the right impression?

Always bear in mind that your audience will start forming their opinion of you from the first moment that they see you and long before you have a chance to woo them with your words. Your poise - that is, the visual impression given to the audience - will influence their first impression of you and that is something that you must pay great attention to .

Make sure that your impression is a positive one.

Polish. This is what will make a good speech great! It is also the thing that will enable you to rid yourself of any pre-speech nerves. Thorough preparation is the key to most things in life and speaking in public is no exception.

Make time to rehearse your speech in front of a mirror, or better still, in front of your family or friends. Make sure that you become very familiar with the content of your speech. Practice until you find the most effective style of delivery and think about the incorporation of suitable gestures. Spend time on anything that you feel needs to be practised until it becomes second nature.

Closely scrutinise your stage outfit and pay detailed attention to your posture. How you stand will certainly display any outward signs of tension you may be feeling so don’t lean, don’t hunch, don’t slouch and don’t allow yourself lose concentration. Polish your performance until it gleams! In spite of all these efforts, you must strive to appear relaxed, confident and in control at all times - even if you don’t feel it.

If you can remember the three Ps in ’speechmaking’ - Pace, Poise and Polish, you will be certain that your speech will be delivered in such as way that any audience will be enthralled, entertained and enraptured by your performance.

There are many websites online today that promise to connect students to their classmates, but not everyone is going to be a member of one website so it makes it hard to truly come into contact with everyone from a certain class year. This is especially true for those who graduated long ago and don’t necessarily have computer experience, or even the knowledge necessary to find classmates over the Internet.

Almost everyone has some sort of affiliation with Facebook or MySpace, as they have become standard names on the Internet. This affiliation usually isn’t available for older adults, who have missed the social networking craze and probably aren’t able to connect with old friends with them. In such a case, other means of finding old classmates will have to be enacted.

Although social networking is a great way to find friends, it doesn’t always work out. Thankfully students of Wymondham College have put together unofficial websites to help track down old friends. Wymondham College doesn’t endorse these webpsites, so their authenticity can’t be guaranteed, but many have seen some form of success when other means of finding old classmates fails.

There is a diverse range of uses for flow meters. They have applications for individuals, a common one being to help people with asthma. A peak flow meter measures the lung capacity when someone exhales. This can help to predict an imminent asthma attack.

Other than that, flow meters are used in many industries, like the food processing industry, water management, semi conductor fabrication and many others. This article will give a brief overview of how flow meters work.

There are a wide variety of types of flow meters. They are generally classified by what they do or how they operate. For instance, a mass flow meter is a general classification of flow meter that determines the flow rate of a medium in terms of mass even though the operating principles for each meter may be different.

One example of a principle governing the name of a meter is the Coriolis flow meter. It uses the Coriolis effect to determine the mass of a fluid passing through two vibrating tubes or pipes. The idea being that by understanding the change in the characteristics of the wave patterns in the vibrating tubes, you can correlate the flow rate of the substance passing through.

Ultrasonic and Doppler shift flow meters also use the changes caused to sound waves to correlate a rate of flow for the medium passing through the meter.

In the case of the ultrasonic flow meter, two transmitters of ultrasonic sound waves are placed at the ends of a pipe where the measure is to take place. Each transmitter sends a pulse of sound.

Receivers at opposite ends of the pipe record the sound waves. One pulse of ultrasonic wave is sent off in the direction of the flow while the other is in the opposite direction.

If various constants are known about the metal of the pipe and the liquid or gas passing through the pipe, a rate of flow can be derived from the time it takes each sound wave to reach the receiver.

Doppler shift flow meters also use waves to determine the flow rate. They work on the principle that a sound wave that bounces off a moving particle in the medium has it’s frequency and amplitude changed. By determining the change in these dimensions, the flow rate of the medium can be determined.

A more traditional type of flow meter is the variable area flow meter that uses a float in a calibrated tube. When a substance passes through the tube, the float is displaced by the flow.

The float indicates a measurement on the calibrated tube. This is a correlation of the flow rate of the substance that has just passed through the tube. An example of such a device is the peak flow meter that is used to measure lung capacity. Peak flow meters help people with asthma determine if they are likely to have an asthma attack.

Is it Too Late?

Students all over the world may be studying English as a second language - whether it is a requirement or not, but what about adults? It is common knowledge that it is much easier to learn a language when one is very young and still developing early language skills. In fact, the very best time to pick up any language is actually before five years of age. Does this mean that it is virtually impossible for anyone over the age of 5 (or 10 for that matter) to learn a new language such as English? The answer is very simple - no. Learning English may be more difficult and unnatural for an adult to learn, but it is definitely not too late. It may require more work, studying and practicing for an adult to truly learn English, but it is by no means impossible.

Factors in Learning

There are many different factors that will influence the level of ease or difficulty each individual will experience when learning English as an adult. Some of these include age, disposition, behavioral attitudes, native language, frequency of practice, etc. Generally speaking, the greater the amount of time that is spent on studying English lessons and practicing English, the quicker and more thoroughly the language will be learned. This is true of any foreign language that is studied - not only by adults, but also by youth and children.

Adults Learning English in the U.S.

There are a great number of immigrants, visitors and students in the United States who wish to learn to speak, read and write English. Below are some things that are known about the adult English language student population.

- Native Tongue

The majority of individuals who speak a language other than English at home speak Spanish (60%). The second most prevalent language is Chinese. The remaining eight of the top 10 languages spoken are (in descending order) French, German, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Italian, Korean, and Polish (U.S. Census Bureau, 2003).

- Level of Education

Adult English learners have a wide variety of educational backgrounds, ranging from no education at all to advanced degrees.

- Ability to Speak English

The English speaking ability of adults learning English will typically range from low beginning, with means the individual has limited opportunities to use English outside of class, to high advanced (near native proficiency). Most English language learners enrolled in adult education programs for English are in beginning literacy or beginning ESL classes.

George: I don’t know. I just study hard and apply myself I guess.

You: Just what does it mean to really put a lot of work into studying?

George: Well ya know I spend a lot of time studying. Don’t you?

You: Yeah I do, but I’m not getting the results that I desire. How come you can spend seemingly less hours than I do in a week?… How many hours do you spend studying exactly?

George: Probably around four hours a week. One a day on three days between Monday and Friday, and sometimes another hour on the weekend.

You: When do you study?

George: I study as soon as I get home. I can’t concentrate after dinner because I get too sleepy. If I have an after-school activity, then I study about an hour after dinner. I go and do a social activity with mates for an hour or so, this relaxes me and helps me to focus more.

You: Where do you study? At home, the library, outside in a park?

George: Your question is rather coincidental. In the past, I studied in my room because my parents were watching TV and I found it too difficult to concentrate. Now, I just go downstairs to the nice, quiet basement instead.

It’s important that George doesn’t feel like you are slamming him with too many questions. Be sure to check in with him to make sure that he is okay with participating. George needs to feel as though you are happy and grateful for his cooperation and help. He might not be aware of how much you appreciate his input, so you should clearly communicate your pleasure.

You: Now that you’ve made it as far as the desk, what’s your next step?

George: I determine what I am going to accomplish in this session, then I start. I do all the assigned problems. If I have time left over, I’ll try the odd numbered problems if the even ones were assigned. I stop doing problems when I “know” I can do this type of problem. It usually takes me three problems to get the hang of it. I do all my extra math problems that I don’t hand in to the teacher in pen - which helps me see my mistakes when I review for quizzes and exams.

You: I really appreciate it, George. I think I’ll try some of that stuff tonight. I also wanted to let you know that using pens of different colors seems to help me visualize and recall the notes. You should consider trying that. I’ll be in touch with any other suggestions.

It is important to show other people how much you actually appreciate the time they invest in helping you to advance. The best ways for doing that depend on the individual people and the situation. The important thing to remember is to show your gratitude afterwards with at least a heart-felt ‘thank you’.

Your professors and teachers, parents, older siblings, or even your local librarians could serve as excellent resources as well. To find the best match, try to find a mentor that has already accomplished the same goals you’ve set for yourself.

Parents can play a huge role in helping their kids to learn a new language, so here are just a few ideas:

1. Emigrate!

2. Reading and watching TV

3. Help them make bilingual friends

4. Lead by example

5. Make a game out of it

6. Foreign exchange visits

7. Holiday away

8. Hire a Nanny or Au Pair that speaks your childs target language

You may think this a rather drastic move, but it is, without doubt, the most effective way to make your child bilingual. Once the initial fear and intimidation is put aside, your child will start communicating with the local children and new language skills will develop dramatically. It may be as little as 3 months before the child is able to hold a fluent conversation, although the grammar and stuff will come a bit later).

Watching TV and reading foreign reading material

It is exactly what it says. Look for foreign TV channels and encourage your children to watch them. You could make it a bit of a quest, limiting normal TV to 2 hours a day, but no limit on the foreign stuff.

If you live in a cosmopolitan area, try the local newsagency for reading material that will suit your childs iinterests but it is in a foreign language. Now try and push them a little to learn and then to show off their new language skills and knowledge at school.

Help them make bilingual friends

Unless you live in Siberia, you probably have people of many different nationalities living around you. Encourage your kids to befriend children bilingual in their target language, or who don’t speak your mother tongue well. You’ll be amazed at just how quickly children begin to communicate with one another.

If you go to church or another religious community every week, why not go to a foreign speaking one to learn a new language? Try once a month, then go more often. You will probably be invited to take part to some kind of community activity afterwards, an excellent opportunity to practice your own skills, include your child and make new friends.

Do it your way!

Begin at an early age by giving your children the idea that knowing several languages is a sign of excellence; something desirable. Do it yourself and include your child in your home studies so that you learn together. Furthermore, show them that this can be fun and quite easy (and not just a boring lesson at school!), and encourage them all the way.

Have fun a make it a challenge

Buy a cheap clock-radio and get your child to have a wake up call in a foreign language! Don’t worry if the early morning banter doesn’t accomplish much, but it may help your child to get into the music of a different culture. You’ll be surprised at how many new words and phrases can be learned from the music alone.

Have an I-pay-your-foreign-books-and-movies policy with your kids. There are many excellent movies that run in foreign languages in most big cities, and many foreign language bookshops as well. If you pay for those, you give your kids a strong incentive to practice the languages they learn.

Exchange students

Arrange a year abroad for your child, or a few months in the summer at least. This will only cost you the flight ticket, as another child (let’s say, a young Spaniard) will come to your house for the same amount of time. For those who actually did this during their teenage years, this is one of the most meaningful experiences of their youth. And the languages learned early stay forever, and with a much better accent too.

Holiday abroad

Decide a few months in advance that you are going to book a holiday where the local language is the language that your child is learning. Tell your child that they will need to be your guide and be able to help the rest of the family whilst they are all away. Hopefully this will motivate them to learn as much as possible so that they can show off their skills when the family is all away together.

Get a foreign Au Pair or Nanny

A great idea is to hire a Housekeeper or Au Pair that will be around your child during the day. Ask her not to communicate too much in English and to always speak to your child in her own mother tongue.

Use books, CD-ROM’s, videos, on-line courses, etc.

Keep things interesting by mixing up childrens language courses in books, videos, on-line courses, etc. A new game on CD-ROM but in another language can always get’em going again!

Private lessons

In most areas, it isn’t too expensive to hire a private language tutor. It is much more effective for your child to receive one-to-one tuition than to try and learn in a classroom filled with other chldren. The way to achieve optimum results, would be to combine this with any of the other methods mentioned earlier.

In these enlightened times there is no reason for anyone to have dry skin. This is because there are just so many anti-wrinkle creams and potions available to us. They all claim to make our skin supple smooth and young looking even though we are technically “over the hill.”

Let us think about the reasons your skin starts to age before reflecting on the factors that make anti-wrinkle cream work. As we advance in years our skin begins to reflect our age. We begin to experience wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots. Of course there can be many reasons for this. Prolonged exposure to the sun, smoking, heavy drinking, and even genetics can play their part in skin aging. Your skin gradually undergoes changes as you age. You will find that collagen will decrease and there is often an increase in “free radicals” which will deteriorate your skin.

Although skin on the face will without question wrinkle to some extent as we get older, we can help reverse some of those effects of aging with a good antiwrinkle cream. Of course, we also have to make good choices with diet, exercise, and proper hydration, as well as avoiding smoking and getting enough sleep if we want to look younger.

There is a glut of anti-wrinkle creams and anti-aging potions on the market but it is good to know that the best ones will have ingredients like the following in them:

One of the best ingredients you can find in an anti-wrinkle cream is something called retinol. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. it’s an antioxidant, so it helps neutralize free radicals. It also increases skin cell turnover. This is beneficial because when we are in our 20s, our outer layer of skin is replaced roughly every 28 days. By the time we’re in our 40s, that may have increased to 42 or even more days. To help retain fresh, young skin even into our 40s, we need to speed up this replacement. Retinol does this by dissolving the outer layer of skin and revealing fresh, new skin underneath.

Alpha hydroxy acids and the newer beta and poly hydroxy acids are acids derived from fruit. These acids are exfoliants, which means it removes the outer layer of skin and encourages fresh new skin to appear from beneath. This is similar to one of retinol’s functions, but hydroxy acids produce a minor “injury” to the skin that also encourages new collagen growth to occur in the skin layers themselves. One drawback to hydroxy acids is that they do make you much more photosensitive, so always wear sunscreen when you’re out in the sun.

Coenzyme Q 10 is another antioxidant that’s many times more potent than traditional antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals. This is beneficial to skin because free radicals contribute to aging. Some studies suggest that it may also help stimulate collagen growth.

It is thought that Kinetin may help to moisturize the skin and increase collagen growth. It is relatively new and more clinical trials must be done to see the real results.

A point to remember is that price is not an indication of how well an anti-wrinkle cream performs. The best policy is to do your own research. You can do this by checking out reviews and testimonials of the product. This will help you to get a more balanced view of the anti-wrinkle cream. By this means you can save money and get a good product.
